Why Cheerleading is a Sport

By Kaye Fish | The News Herald

As the newspaper adviser for Patton High School, I assigned one of my students a controversial topic. Is cheerleading a sport? The fact that she is a cheerleader lead me to believe that she would read my mind and write exactly what I thought she would write. USASF Announces New Division

Let's Go Canada!

Where Did It All Begin?

Cheerleading made its entrance at Princeton University in the 1880s with the chant, "Rah rah rah, tiger tiger tiger, sis sis sis, boom boom boom ahhhhhhh, Princeton Princeton Princeton!" This was an attempt to encourage the crowd at their sporting competitions to cheer. Although it is estimated that 90% of today's cheerleading participants are female, cheerleading started out as an all-male activity.
